At 4.14pm on Monday 20 March 2023 the volunteer crew members of the Beaumaris lifeboat received a page from the UK Coastguard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Holyhead relating to a yacht that was taking on water by the Caernarfon Bar in the Menai Straits.

The lifeboat launched at 4.30pm proceeding to the craft to assist it from this potentially dangerous situation.

Having ensured that all was well with the two male and two female crew aboard the vessel. An assessment was made by the helmsman as to the best course of action. It was decided after placing a salvage pump aboard that for safety reasons that the boat should be towed to the nearest place of safety this being Victoria Dock Caernarfon.

On arrival at Victoria dock the salvage pump was kept running which together with the bilge pump and bailing managed to reduce the water level to enable the water entry point to be located and plugged by the Dock Master and the crew of the yacht.

Once this had been completed at 7.35pm the lifeboat was able to remove her salvage pump and was then released by the coastguard to return to her station.at Beaumaris returning at 8.20pm to be refuelled and cleaned. Once this had been completed the crew left the station.

A RNLI spokesperson said: 'The crew aboard the yacht did the correct thing in requesting assistance once they became aware of the difficulties they faced.'
