RNLI lifeguards will be on duty daily at Bantham, Croyde and Woolacombe from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, patrolling daily from 10am.

While the main RNLI lifeguard season has ended, the October half-term period remains a popular time for families, surfers and other water users to visit the coast. The RNLI is encouraging anyone heading to the beach to choose a lifeguarded beach and speak to RNLI lifeguards for the latest local safety advice.

Henry Saddler-Irvine, RNLI Regional Lifeguard Lead for the South West, said:

‘Devon's coastline continues to attract visitors throughout the autumn months, and we're pleased to be returning to Bantham, Croyde and Woolacombe during the school half-term holiday.

‘Although the summer season has ended, many of the hazards associated with the coast remain. Autumn weather can bring large swells, strong rip currents and rapidly changing sea conditions, which can catch people out unexpectedly.

‘We'd encourage anyone planning a trip to the beach to choose a lifeguarded beach where possible, swim and bodyboard between the red and yellow flags, and don't hesitate to speak to our lifeguards if they have any questions about the conditions.’

The RNLI is reminding beach visitors to check weather forecasts and tide times before heading out and to be aware of tidal cut-offs and stronger currents often associated with autumn conditions.

Anyone entering the water should remember the RNLI's Float to Live advice. If you find yourself in difficulty, tilt your head back with your ears submerged, relax and try to control your breathing. Use your hands to help you stay afloat and call for help if you can.

RNLI lifeguards will patrol the following Devon beaches daily from 24 October to 1 November 2026:

  • Bantham

  • Croyde

  • Woolacombe

If you see someone in trouble at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
