Staying safe at Brean Beach

Find out how you and your loved ones can enjoy your time at Brean beach safely.

At Brean beach, here’s what you need to be aware of…

  • The lifeguard station is located on the beach towards the Southern end of the beach car park.
  • There is a large tidal range (the 2nd largest in the world). To avoid being caught out by the tide, please check the tide times before you go.
  • The underside of Brean Down headland is host to numerous small coves and rock pools. Please be careful when rambling and rock pooling as the tide comes in quickly and can cut off unsuspecting explorers.
  • Brean beach has areas of deep mud that shift and change constantly. Between mid and low tide, please stay on the sand at the top of the beach. If you get stuck, remain calm and try not to struggle. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard. If you can see lifeguards, attract their attention and they will help you.
  • If you’re taking part in any water sports, make sure you wear a flotation device and always carry a means of calling for help.
  • If parking on the beach for the day, please keep to the mandatory speed limit and be aware of dogs, horses and children playing. Heed instruction from the local beach wardens with regards to where to park, as the top of the beach can host soft sand, whereas the lower section presents mud.
  • Speak with lifeguards about conditions on the day.
To have fun safely on all lifeguarded beaches:
  • swim between the red and yellow flags
  • protect your family
  • we advise against using inflatable toys as they can be quickly blown out to sea
  • if you’re in trouble in the water, Float to Live
  • in an emergency, alert the lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
