2026: the 25th anniversary of RNLI lifeguards

Making your seaside safer since 2001.

RNLI lifeguards have been keeping our beaches safer since 2001, when a trial service was set up on the south coast of England. Since then, their patrols have expanded to over 245 beaches around the UK and Channel Islands with a lifeguard operations centre.

No two beaches are the same – their terrain, hazards and visitors vary greatly. But when the red and yellow flags are flying, these beaches are safer. In fact, RNLI lifeguards have saved the lives of more than 2,000 people and helped many thousands more. So, in 2026, we’re celebrating our lifeguards - and asking more people to support the charity that recruits, trains and equips them: your RNLI.
