Lifeboats News Release

Numerous calls were made by members of the public to the emergency services on Saturday afternoon as the tide continued to come in at a rapid pace.

The BV launch vehicle and D class lifeboat can be seen recovering.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team

West Kirby RNLI were tasked on Saturday afternoon

The volunteer crew of West Kirby RNLI were paged at 12.50pm on Saturday 7 February to reports of two people and a dog stuck between Middle Eye and Little Eye.

The D class lifeboat, Leonard Pownall, launched and headed to the islands, while HM Coastguard stayed on the phone to the casualty, reassuring them help was on the way.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team, HM Coastguard Crosby and a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter were also tasked to the scene.

West Kirby’s volunteer crew located the individuals, who were shaken and cold but thankfully uninjured, before they were brought back to the lifeboat station to warm up with a cup of tea, meaning all involved were stood down.

Richard Diamond, Lifeboat Operations Manager, said:

‘Thank you to the members of the public who raised the alarm and allowed us to get to the casualties as soon as possible.

‘The high tide can very quickly catch people out with the speed and direction it comes in. The casualties did the right thing in checking the times before heading out but misjudged their return. We advise leaving the islands no later than three hours before the next high tide.

‘The second you believe you, or anybody else, are in danger at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
