Wells RNLI assist two people and a dog cut off by the tide
On Sunday 9 March, HM coastguard requested the assistance of Wells RNLI to assist two people and a dog cut off by the tide.
Wells RNLI D class inshore lifeboat Peter Wilcox was launched from the boathouse at 11:54am with a volunteer crew of three onboard and proceeded to the location given to the west side of Wells harbour mouth.
The inshore lifeboat crew quickly located the casualties at 11:57am due to good visibility.
The inshore lifeboat crew helped the casualties and the dog aboard, they were unharmed and required no medical assistance. The casualties were transferred back to the boathouse.
Wells RNLI Peter Wilcox’was back ashore at 12:04pm rehoused, refuelled and back on service again at 12:20pm
Chris Hardy. Lifeboat Operations Manager, at RNLI Wells, said: ‘The importance of raising the alarm when seeing someone in distress cannot be understated as without the swift alarm raising this may have been a different outcome. We all must play our part in keeping our coasts safe and alerting the authorities immediately if we see anyone in distress especially as many of us will be enjoying the sunshine and heading to the beach.’
Mandy Humphreys, RNLI Water safety Officer explained: ‘If you are out on the coastline between Brancaster staithe and Cley make sure you are back on the main beach, dry sand/land with no more channels or drains to cross at least four hours before Wells bar high tide.
‘If you do find yourself cut off by the tide, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard and stay calm while you wait for help.’
Notes to editor
Wells RNLI has a D class inshore lifeboat Peter Wilcox and a Shannon class all- weather lifeboat Duke of Edinburgh. The boathouse and the all-weather lifeboat were new in 2022. The Duke of Edinburgh lifeboat was the first UK Launch a Memory lifeboat, which has 15,000 names printed on the decals. This helped to raise much needed funds for the RNLI and attracts thousands of visitors to the station each year.
