The Cambridge based golf society play nine golf events yearly and last year Leonard Cawley became the society’s captain. The RNLI was his chosen charity for 2025.

Leonard Cawley explained: ‘We are a Cambridge based golf society, made up of a wide variety of people, from many different backgrounds.

‘My chosen charity was the RNLI; I’ve personally supported the charity for many years. RNLI lifeboat crews many who are volunteers themselves give up their time as a duty and consideration to others danger.

‘If our small donation helps in some way to protect RNLI lifeboat crews and help save someone's life, then my year as captain has been a success.’

The RNLI as a charity relies on the kindness and generosity of people such as the Cambridge golf society and what better way to help the volunteer crews continue to be able to save lives at sea 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year, than with a round of golf.

On behalf of Wells RNLI, Coxswain Nicky King, said: 'We are extremely grateful for support in raising funds for Wells Station. We all appreciate the significant donation they have made to the RNLI.’

Notes to editors

Wells RNLI has a D class inshore lifeboat Peter Wilcox and a Shannon class all-weather lifeboat Duke of Edinburgh. The boathouse and the all-weather lifeboat were new in 2022. The Duke of Edinburgh lifeboat was the first UK Launch a Memory lifeboat, which has 15,000 names printed on the decals. This helped to raise much needed funds for the RNLI and attracts thousands of visitors to the station.
