Storm Smith-Suckoo Passes Out as Volunteer Thames Commander at Tower RNLI
Tower RNLI is proud to announce that volunteer crew member Storm Smith-Suckoo has successfully passed out as a Volunteer Thames Commander following an intensive assessment on the evening of Wednesday 3 December.
The assessment, designed to rigorously test a candidate’s ability to manage the lifeboat in some of the most demanding and high-pressure situations on the River Thames, saw Storm demonstrate exceptional skill, composure, and leadership. His performance confirmed his expert understanding of lifeboat operations, safety management, and command decision-making in extreme circumstances.
Storm joined Tower RNLI little over five years ago, bringing a wealth of maritime knowledge and operational experience, including holding a Master Unlimited Certificate of Competence, he has long been recognised as a valued and capable member of the crew. His professional background and dedication to lifesaving are key reasons he has proven to be the right person for this important role.
Station Manager Kevin Maynard praised Storm’s achievement, saying, ‘From the moment Storm arrived at Tower he showed he was a man of talent. With his exceptional knowledge of navigation and his helming skills, he’s perfected his managing of crew and proved worthy of the volunteer Thames Commander role.’
Reflecting on the milestone, Storm said, 'Having spent my entire career in the maritime sector, it remains not just my profession but a true passion. Serving at Tower RNLI has offered a welcome contrast to my day-to-day work, and being able to play even a small role in search and rescue means a great deal to me. I am incredibly proud to have qualified as a volunteer Thames Commander, and I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the crew and full-time staff at Tower that have supported me throughout this journey.'
Tower RNLI congratulates Storm on his accomplishment and looks forward to his continued contribution to the station and the communities it serves.
