The money represents the amount collected in Betty's 5p Pots which are small glass jars. David Hastings Hon. Secretary of the Durham Branch of the RNLI said: 'It is thanks to the massive effort from our incredibly generous supporters in a local 20-mile radius area that we have raised this fantastic amount. It's took eight years and nine months to reach this figure. Donations have included four million 5p coins that weigh 15 tonnes and if laid out in a straight line would stretch for 45 miles.'
