Wirral Kayak Challenge event raises over £2,000 for local RNLI stations

The Wirral Kayak Challenge event in July raised a impressive £1,780 for the crews of West Kirby, Hoylake, and New Brighton RNLI lifeboat stations, which was presented during an evening of music and celebration at the Railway in Meols on Saturday 19 October. During July's event, the RNLI Fundraising Team also raised a fantastic £437 through shop sales, further enhancing the success of the event, bringing the combined total to £2,217. In addition to supporting local lifeboat services, the event also generated £6,000 for Stick 'n' Step, an organisation dedicated to supporting children with cerebral palsy and their families.

Mike Dudley, the event organiser, shared:

‘We chose the RNLI as one of the charities this year because of its community focus, and personally, having many friends among the crew across the stations, it’s nice to be able to give back.’

Despite challenging weather conditions on the day, the kayakers powered through with remarkable effort, and all participants made it back to the Dee Sailing Club safely. Mike Dudley and his team including Julie Hutton, Sheree Kenton and Helen Meadows deserve special recognition for organising the event, ensuring a successful and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Hoylake duty Coxswain Matt Pownall-Jones said:

‘This was an amazing achievement by the kayakers! We enjoyed a great evening with a local band. We are delighted and grateful they are sponsoring us again next year. They have raised more than £80,000 for local charities since they started in 2012.’

Rich Diamond, West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, praised Mike and his team, stating:

'We are incredibly thankful for their hard work in organising the kayak challenge and for this generous donation. Their continued support is invaluable in helping us maintain our lifesaving operations.

‘The collaboration between local events and the RNLI highlights the essential role that community plays in ensuring the safety of those who enjoy our coastal waters.’
