Two shouts in a day for Cardigan RNLI crew
Two lifeboat shouts in little more than eight hours kept the volunteer crew from Cardigan RNLI Lifeboat Station on their toes.
The first call-out on Friday 18 October came shortly before 10am, when the volunteer crew responded to reports of a small boat adrift well out from shore in Cardigan Bay.
The Poppit Sands station’s Atlantic 85 was quickly on scene and found the boat to be unmanned, apparently having broken free of its mooring. In order to avoid it posing a risk to other vessels and to avoid further call-outs, the boat was towed back into the River Teifi estuary to a temporary mooring.
The second shout came at 6.15pm that evening, as Cardigan’s D class lifeboat was launched to help a small craft in trouble in the estuary near Patch. The vessel was soon reached with help from Cardigan Coastguard Rescue Team and was found to be struggling to make progress upriver against the strong current.
Due to its location, risk to navigation and the situation likely to worsen due to the strong current, the craft was taken in tow to a mooring at Netpool and passed over to the safe hands of the Coastguard Team, with the lifeboat back on station by 8pm.
The following day, the crew were delighted to welcome Margaret and Brian Daniel, who visited the station to hand over a cheque for £300 to the lifesaving charity. The couple had raised £600 to celebrate their diamond wedding and the money was divided between the RNLI and the Welsh Air Ambulance.
