The boat had developed engine difficulty in the estuary and sought help as it was being driven towards the abounding sandbanks.

The Courtmacsherry lifeboat crew quickly assembled and the inshore D class lifeboat was quickly launched with the all-weather lifeboat, Val Adnams, on standby.

The D class lifeboat with helm Ken Cashman and crew member Austin McKenna onboard proceeded to the shallow water near the sandbanks and were able to progress a tow rope to the boat and bring those onboard safely back to the pier's pontoon.

Also quickly on the scene was a local boat owner who was in the vicinity at the time and diverted his course to be of assistance.

Courtmacsherry RNLI Launch Authority Philip White said: 'It was great to be of assistance today as the three people who sought help quickly were close to shore. It is always important to seek help immediately whenever an incident occurs at sea by calling 112 or 999 and asking for the Coast Guard.'

The Courtmacsherry lifeboat crew responding to today’s call out were Coxswain Ken Cashman, Austin McKenna, Stuart Russell, Dave Philips, Denis Murphy, Luke Hanley, Ian McCarthy, Niamh Hurley, Paul McCarthy and Tom Kelly.
