Great Yarmouth and Gorleston RNLI Guild have a busy month of events
Great Yarmouth and Gorleston RNLI Guild of Fundraisers have been hosting various events this August - from a whole crew photo opportunity, seafront barbecue, and clifftop festival - to raise vital funds and awareness for the charity that saves lives at sea.
On Thursday, 1 August 2024, Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) representatives from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston participated in a special photo moment – One Moment for One Crew – to create a photographic record of those involved with the lifesaving charity in this, its 200th anniversary year.
The charity, which was founded in 1824, asked its volunteers and staff from around the UK and Ireland to take a photo of themselves, their crew, or their team at as close to 18:24 on 1.8.24
Lifeboat crew, fundraisers from the Guild, and shop volunteers from RNLI communities in the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston area all took part in the historical event. The photo captured will be used to create a montage containing photos from all the RNLI’s 238 lifeboat stations, branches and lifeguard units.
The shop volunteers created an extravagant buffet for all attendees, which was enjoyed by all.
On Saturday 3 August, the guild held its first summer barbecue on the terrace of the Cliff Hotel, Gorleston.
The event was held in replacement of the cancelled May Ball and 180 guests attended the event, led by Jannie Baines-Burton and her team. There was a special guest appearance by Norfolk's very own East Anglian Boy, Leon Mallet, singing his parody of American Boy that has been viewed online more than 2 million times. The evening raised £3,200.
The following day, Sunday 4 August, shop volunteers, led by Jane Webster were out in force selling merchandise and bicentennial memorabilia at the 25th annual Gorleston Cliff Top Festival on the seafront. Also that day the lifeboat station welcomed the Mayor of Great Yarmouth Borough, Councillor Paula Waters-Bunn.
She was given a tour of the station by coxswain Andy Mason and was also shown inshore lifeboat John Rowntree and all-weather lifeboat Samarbeta.
After an extensive tour and asking lots of questions, the Mayor enjoyed tea and sandwiches with the crew.
Great Yarmouth and Gorleston RNLI Guild of Fundraisers aims to raise vital lifesaving funds for the RNLI ensuring the charity and its volunteer crews and lifeguards can continue saving people from the risk of drowning for the next 200 years. The branch welcomes new members.
