The inshore lifeboat launched at 6.44pm and was alongside the casualty vessel at 6.53pm.
Following an assessment of the situation it was decided to request the assistance of the all weather lifeboat to tow the vessel back to Kafiga Landings at Hartlepool.
The all weather lifeboat launched at 7.06pm and was alongside the casualty vessel at 7.40pm where two crewmembers were placed aboard the vessel to assess the yacht crew and assist with steering.
The yacht was then taken undertow by the all weather lifeboat back to Hartlepool arriving at the Headland's Kafiga Landings at 9.10pm where the yacht and its two crew were met by the local Coastguard team and Harbour Police.
Hartlepool RNLI Coxswain Robbie Maiden said "It was a straight forward tow job for us but it was good to see the yacht and its crew safe and sound back in Hartlepool."
Both lifeboats then returned to the Ferry Road lifeboat station and were refuelled and made ready for service by 9.40pm.
Sea state was slight to moderate with a 3 to 4 metre swell and an 8 to 14 knot northerly wind.
