RNLI Saltburn lifeguards and RNLI Redcar undertake joint training
On Wednesday 27 July, the lifeguard team at Saltburn teamed up with the lifeboat team at Redcar for a joint training exercise.
The training was based at Saltburn beach and saw the two RNLI groups work together in a mock shout to test their abilities.
The scenario saw the team try to locate and help a man who had fallen and possibly broken his ankle near Saltburn pier. Whilst the team helped the casualty, a second mock shout came through concerning a jet ski, which had crashed into a group of surfers causing multiple injuries.
RNLI Redcar was launched whilst the Saltburn lifeguard team remained ashore, helping their fellow lifesavers locate the casualties in the water.
The lifeboat team assisted once all casualties were ashore and provided casualty care, even giving CPR to a dummy.
Nathan Hobday, Training Coordinator at Redcar, praised the success of the two teams throughout the training exercise: ‘The joint exercise with the Saltburn lifeguard team was ultimately designed to be a stress test on our response as a collaboration.
'This particular scenario was designed to escalate quickly so to focus on the level of casualty care and quality of first aid administered.
'Overall, the teams successfully managed to sift through the chaos and deliver a level of casualty care that ensured each individual was treated in a good time frame.’
If you find yourself in any trouble in and around the water this summer, please dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. The RNLI lifeguard or lifeboat team will be on hand to help and have undergone excellent training.
