RNLI Hartlepool volunteers carry out life jacket safety checks for boat owners
An RNLI lifejacket safety check for boat owners held at Hartlepool Marina recently has been deemed a success.
Hartlepool RNLI Volunteer Community Safety Officer Jane Varey said: ‘We checked out several lifejackets during the day and gave advice on how to look after lifejackets such as making sure that the C02 cylinder is in good working order and not date expired, crotch straps were in good condition and saddle clips were present. Personal locator beacons were also checked.
‘Some of the lifejackets we inspected had never been ‘opened up’ before which gave the owner an insight as to how salt water can affect the lifesaving equipment and we stressed how vital carrying out basic maintenance on a lifejacket is very important.'
Assisted on the day by Ray Walker of Hartlepool RNLI Lifeboat Station and Ian Howard from St Bees RNLI Lifeboat Station, Jane went on to say: ‘Overall we had a great positive response from those that attended the event and hopefully our next lifejacket safety check will be just as successful as we play our part in saving lives at sea.'
