RNLI Mayday Coastal Challenge Completed

Lifeboats News Release

Nearly 60 people took part in the inaugural RNLI Mayday Coastal Challenge on Saturday, walking up to 14 miles between Leven and Kinghorn, and raising nearly £6,500 in the process.

This new event took place in perfect walking conditions, with a tail wind to help the 57 walkers make their way westwards from one of four start points, along the Fife Coastal Path, to Kinghorn Lifeboat Station.

The RNLI Mayday campaign is an annual fundraising event, which encourages supporters to raise funds for the lifeboat service around the country. Kinghorn and Aberdour RNLI fundraising branches jointly organised this event.

Sheona Smith, Kinghorn fundraising committee Chair, said, ‘this first running of the Coastal Challenge has been a resounding success, with nearly 60 people taking part, and £6,500 being raised.

‘We were delighted that so many people took part in the walk, and would like to thank everyone who took part.

‘At the end of the walk we were presented with a donation of £270 from a young boy who took part in the walk from Dysart to Kinghorn. He had raised this money through sponsorship for completing the walk, which was a fantastic effort.

‘The event was also supported by the local partner emergency services, including RNLI lifeguards, police, ambulance service, and Kinghorn and Leven Coastguard rescue teams. The 14 mile walk began at Leven Coastguard Station, and we were warmly welcomed there as we waved off the walkers.

‘We now begin preparing for our annual open day, which will be held on Saturday 16th July.’
