Woman who hit face on rocks treated by RNLI lifeguards at Borth

Lifeguards News Release

RNLI lifeguards treated a tourist who fell and hit her face on rocks and was in danger of being cut off by the tide.

Lifeguards Lisa James and Harry Dennis raced to the woman’s aid after the incident on Borth beach at about 4.30pm on Tuesday (2 August).

The woman, who was in her 40s and visiting the area from Germany, fell on rocks 100m to the left of the beach lifeguard unit and Lisa and Harry were alerted to her situation by her son.

Harry reached the woman first and carried out an initial assessment. She had fallen and hit the bridge of her nose on rocks, cutting it. Then after getting up she fell backwards into a rock pool.

The tide was coming in and the rocks the woman were on would soon be cut off, so Lisa and Harry led the woman back to the unit through the now knee-deep sea water.

Once back safely to the beach lifeguard unit, her cuts were treated and as she was given warm clothing and a warm drink.  The woman was complaining of dizziness and sickness so lifeguards, who are fully first aid trained, went through concussion protocols, including calling for an ambulance.

Lisa and Harry then monitored her condition before passing her into the care of paramedics.

RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor for Ceredigion Michael Vincent said: ‘Lisa and Harry showed good awareness during this incident. Not only did this woman need treatment to her face and legs after a nasty fall, she was displaying signs of concussion. On top of that there was the risk of tidal cut off so the lifeguards needed to move her quickly and safely back up the beach to continue her treatment.

‘All of our lifeguards receive full first aid training so the woman’s son did exactly the right thing on Tuesday by approaching our lifeguards and asking for help.’

RNLI lifeguards are providing a daily safety service on eight beaches in Ceredigion throughout the summer holidays. Lifeguards will be on duty every day between 10am and 6pm.
