Spotlight on Youth Development: Duke of Edinburgh's Award now available across all UK RNLI locations
The RNLI is expanding opportunities for young people to get involved in volunteering, with Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) placements now available across all UK locations following a successful trial.
The move marks another step in the RNLI's commitment to providing clear and safe pathways for young people to support the charity while developing valuable skills and experience. Young people can also take part in other recognised youth activity schemes, including the Welsh Baccalaureate and Saltire Awards.
During the trial, more than 20 RNLI locations established youth placements, including lifeboat stations, shops and fundraising teams. The success of the programme means opportunities can now be offered more widely across the UK.
Young people who have completed placements have spoken positively about their experiences:
- ‘Really great fun being at the station. Helped to broaden my understanding of what the RNLI does.’
- ‘When I got the opportunity to help out at the lifeboat station as part of undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, I grabbed it with both hands.
- ‘I felt welcomed by the whole crew and came away with a real appreciation for the people who volunteer their time to help keep others safe.’
The impact has also been recognised by RNLI colleagues supporting the placements. One Community Manager said:
‘Throughout her 12-week journey, she proved to be a dedicated, professional and enthusiastic ambassador for the RNLI. Feedback from volunteers was overwhelmingly positive, and we would be delighted to welcome her back in any capacity.’
The RNLI has developed processes and resources to support young people taking part in youth activity schemes, with safeguarding, supervision and wellbeing remaining a priority. The charity continues to ensure appropriate risk assessments, consent processes and support arrangements are in place for all opportunities involving under-18s.
Could your location get involved?
Locations interested in supporting DofE or other youth activity schemes are encouraged to complete the Youth Scheme Expression of Interest form. Before applying, locations should consider whether they have suitable facilities, identified Youth Support Supervisors and can meet the safeguarding requirements associated with hosting young people.
Alongside youth activity schemes, volunteer opportunities remain available for under-18s in RNLI shops, visits teams and fundraising groups.
For more information about opportunities for under-18s and safeguarding guidance and resources, visit our safeguarding pages or contact your regional volunteering adviser.
Keep an eye out for more updates about the work we're doing to develop pathways and engage more young people in RNLI activities. This will include new training and resources for volunteer managers, and development of a youth voice panel.
