New volunteer guidance for using AI responsibly

As AI tools become more widely available, we've introduced new guidance to help volunteers use them safely, responsibly and in line with RNLI policies.

Our new Using AI Responsibly as an RNLI Volunteer guidance sets out:

  • Which AI tools can and cannot be used for RNLI-related activities.
  • How to protect confidential, personal and sensitive information.
  • Why AI-generated content must always be checked for accuracy.
  • How AI can support volunteering activities without replacing human judgement.
  • Requirements for creating communications, posters and imagery using approved RNLI processes and resources.

The guidance explains that Microsoft Copilot is currently the only approved AI tool for RNLI work.

It also reinforces an important principle: if information is not public, it should not be entered into an AI tool.

This helps protect personal data, maintain supporter trust and ensure the RNLI meets its legal and regulatory obligations.

AI can be a valuable tool for generating ideas, summarising information and improving the clarity of documents, but volunteers remain responsible for reviewing and approving any content before it is used or shared.

Please take a few minutes to read the guidance and keep it handy for future reference.

If you're unsure whether a particular use of AI is appropriate, speak to your Volunteer Manager, Community Manager, staff contact or the Internal Communications Team before proceeding.
