First lifeboat station presented with RNLI Green Award
Last year, the RNLI’s Sustainability Team launched the RNLI Green Awards. These awards recognise the sustainable actions happening across our lifeboat stations and support the RNLI’s wider environmental ambitions by highlighting everyday efforts and inspiring simple, practical improvements.
The entry-level award, Green Aware, focuses on building awareness and celebrating initial wins by using RNLI environmental tools, reflecting on current practices, spotting small changes, and recognising what stations are already doing well. The changes required from a station to be awarded Green Aware status are small and simple, but can add up to make a big difference.
Mudeford Lifeboat Station has now become the very first RNLI lifeboat station to earn a Green Award, making small changes that have been embraced by the crew at the station. Simple energy saving wins like heater timers, a new efficient dehumidifier, and ‘last one out’ reminder signs have all been adopted, as well as tracking energy data so opportunities for improvement can be seen.
Working towards Green Aware status can also help to bring environmental thinking into everyday conversations. Mudeford crew have said it helped them realise the station isn’t just a building, it’s part of the local environment they care about, prompting them to complete a spill response drill and training.
