Exploring the potential: Our way ahead with AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform our world faster than any other technology. It’s creating a step change in what’s possible. At the RNLI we want to explore the incredible potential of AI while remaining cautious in our approach. To navigate our AI path safely, we need your help.

AI has the potential to improve how we operate, increase efficiency and boost our creativity so we can fulfil our mission of saving lives.

In a world where the possibilities of AI seem endless, the RNLI maintains a commitment to responsible innovation. AI has the potential to improve how we do things, but it presents its own risks and challenges.

Our use of AI needs to deliver value and benefit to our volunteers, staff and supporters while meeting our moral, legal and professional standards.

As an organisation we are still developing our AI knowledge to understand how we can best use the technology to enhance our efficiency and effectiveness.

A fantastic example of how the RNLI can use AI technology innovatively and safely was the 'Digital Lifeguard Pilot' in summer last year. We trialled the use of AI to reduce the need for manual data collection while improving accuracy and reducing costs, supporting our lifesavers to focus on what they do best – keeping people safe.

Share your ideas with the AI Review Group

We have created a cross-organisation AI Review Group who will evaluate the feasibility, ethical implications, and potential impact of AI initiatives and opportunities within the RNLI.

They will review new and existing ideas and ‘proof of concepts’ to create an overview of things that are working and support people to innovate within policy guidelines. We’ll also be observing how other organisations are using AI, learning from others and working together with partners.

Sharing your thoughts and ideas with the group can help us to develop an ‘AI Roadmap’ that delivers the best value and benefit for the RNLI. Please speak to your RNLI manager if you have an idea to share.

Using AI in your RNLI role

Everyone needs to think carefully about using AI in their role at the RNLI – ensuring that you operate within guidance and policies.

It is crucial to remember that RNLI internal data and personal data should never be used. If you have used AI to deliver a piece of work, you must make it clear that it has been created or informed by the support of AI.

These are the policies that ideas must adhere to:

You may also be surprised to learn that every time you use AI it has a cost and impact on the environment (there is a BBC Panorama episode that delves into this more for those interested).

Thank you for taking the time to read this article. We look forward to reviewing your ideas to better understand how AI can support a sustainable and secure RNLI for the future.
