Meet the people behind the rescues

What does it take to save lives at sea? Here is just one of the stories behind the people who answer the call to rescue.

Hal Richardson, St Davids Lifeboat Station

‘The casualties were very tired and struggled to pull in the tow rope. So one of us had to jump across. Me being the youngest on there by a long way, I knew it was going to be me. I wanted it to be me!

‘Even though I didn’t feel like I did much at the time, when we got back the people on the yacht thanked me so much. It was just this massive overwhelming feeling of “I’ve actually helped someone”.

‘When you don’t save someone, it’s always “What if?”. You just got to say to yourself that you’re doing the best that you can. I want to help people, I like the sense of achievement.

‘You do feel good when you save someone.’
