Lyme Regis RNLI Lifeboat Crew mark 200th birthday with a heritage open day

Lifeboat Week volunteers in Lyme Regis, who raised more than £33,000 at the end of August, are now staging a Heritage Open Day to highlight the 200 year history of an RNLI service in the town.

Guided tours of the lifeboat station on the Cobb, close-up viewing opportunities of the lifeboat itself and an exhibition illustrating how the lifesaving charity began in 1826 will feature all day on Saturday, 19 September.

At a recent meeting (last week) organisers heard that among the most successful events during Lifeboat Week were the barbecues which raised a total of £4,000 and the sales of books and the water or wine tombola each of which totalled £3,000.The Heritage Day will include archive film and historic photographs of the early days of the volunteer lifeboat service in Lyme Regis. The latest edition of a book which chronicles some remarkable rescues by past and present lifeboat crews will be available with all proceeds going to the RNLI.

Petrina Muscroft, chair of the Lyme Regis Lifeboat Management Group said: ‘This is a momentous year in the history of a lifeboat service in our town. Lifeboat Week was a great success thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and the generosity of visitors, residents and sponsors.
‘We now want to welcome visitors to the lifeboat station to hear at first hand from our crew about the incredible history of our lifesaving charity, and, of course, we want to thank them for their generous support.’
