RNLI crews get first look at new lifeboat ahead of Channel Islands fleet changes
Volunteer lifeboat crews across the Channel Islands are set to step aboard the RNLI's most advanced all-weather lifeboat this week as preparations gather pace for the introduction of three Shannon class lifeboats to the Channel Islands fleet in 2027 and early 2028
RNLI relief lifeboat 13-26 John Metters will visit Alderney, St Helier and St Peter Port, giving crews hands-on experience of the Shannon's cutting-edge technology, systems and layout before the new lifeboats enter service.
Over the next 18 months, Alderney, St Helier and St Peter Port will each receive a Shannon class all-weather lifeboat, replacing their existing all-weather lifeboats. The new lifeboats will ensure crews are equipped to respond effectively to modern search and rescue demands and help the RNLI save more lives at sea.
The Shannon is the RNLI's latest all-weather lifeboat and is designed, built and maintained by the charity. The newest Shannon Mk2 incorporates upgraded navigation and onboard management systems, helping crews operate more effectively while improving crew safety and the long-term maintenance of the lifeboat.
Scott Ranft, RNLI Area Operations Manager covering the Channel Islands says;
‘This visit gives our crews a valuable opportunity to get hands-on experience with the Shannon class lifeboat before their own new lifeboats arrive towards the end 2027 and into 2028.
'The crews at Alderney, St Helier and St Peter Port are preparing for the transition and spending time aboard the Shannon now will help build confidence and familiarity ahead of the formal training programme.
‘It's also a great opportunity for our search and rescue partners to see the lifeboat and learn more about its capabilities.’
The Shannon class lifeboat will be in each Island
Alderney – 5-7 November
St Helier - 7-10 November
St Peter Port – 10-13 November
The introduction of the three Shannon class lifeboats will ensure that RNLI crews in Alderney, St Helier and St Peter Port are equipped to meet the evolving demands of modern search and rescue operations for years to come.
These changes are part of the RNLI’s lifeboat fleet strategy which aims to ensure the charity has the most appropriate lifeboats in the right places which will save the greatest number of lives in the most effective way and, crucially, keep our people safe.

Information about the Shannon:
The Shannon is propelled by water jets, rather than traditional propellers, making them extremely manoeuvrable and agile with an ability to operate well in both deep and shallow water. The Shannon is a versatile asset that will enhance the RNLI’s current lifesaving capabilities in the waters around the Channel Islands.
