Campervan crashes into sea off Skye Harbour Slipway
Kyle lifeboat, Spirit of Fred. Olsen, was called out this morning after a campervan went off the slipway at Kylerhea, on the Isle of Skye and ended up on its side in the water.
The Kyle of Lochalsh volunteer crew were paged at 11:32am today (20 May), after a campervan went off the slipway in Kylerhea and ended up lying on its side in the sea.
The lifeboat launched at 11:40am and made best speed towards the scene, arriving approximately 10 minutes later. The crew immediately went to assess the scene and make sure there was no-one trapped inside, and to ensure that nobody was injured. It was soon established that the sole occupant of the campervan and their 3 dogs were safely ashore.
The lifeboat crew ensured that there was no risk to anyone, and liaised with the appropriate authorities, before being stood down by the UK Coastguard. The lifeboat departed the scene at 12:15pm, and arrived back in Kyle at 12:30pm where the boat was washed down, refuelled and made ready for service again.
Norman Finlayson, Helm at Kyle RNLI said: ‘The emergency services received multiple reports of a campervan having entered the water in the Kylerhea narrows area, which is a stretch of water with extremely strong currents. We launched as quickly as possible, and when we arrived on scene, were glad to see that there was nobody trapped inside the vehicle, and the occupant and his 3 dogs were safely ashore.’.
