After months of training at Shoreham Harbour RNLI and the RNLI college in Poole, volunteer crew member Dan Measor was put through his paces on 26 March 2026 by two RNLI assessors to ensure that he has the skills needed to pass out as Coxswain, a vital role that involves having overall command of Shoreham's all-weather lifeboat, the Enid Collett.

Dan, who is already helm on the inshore lifeboat and navigator on both boats, is the first new Coxswain at Shoreham RNLI in five years, signalling his commitment and the incredible amount of hard work he has put into preparing for this role.

His assessment took place for several hours on Thursday 26 March, with two theory exams followed by a thorough testing on the boat schematics for various elements. After this, fellow crew members joined Dan for a three-hour practical session afloat, where Dan was assessed on scenarios including search and rescue, navigation, man overboard, emergency procedures, anchoring and helming.

Dan said: “I’m really thankful for all the other volunteers on the crew who have given up their time to help support me to get here. It's an honour, and I love being part of such an amazing crew.”

Andrew Shiner, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Shoreham RNLI, said: "I’m delighted to congratulate Dan on successfully passing out as Coxswain. This is a significant achievement and a reflection of Dan’s leadership, dedication and commitment to support the RNLI’s mission of saving lives at sea. As a lifesaving charity, our station volunteers are the heart of everything we do, and I know Dan will continue to inspire and guide them through their individual journeys."

Note to editors

Shoreham Harbour RNLI has been saving lives at sea since 1865. Home to a Tamar class all-weather lifeboat, the Enid Collett, and a D class inshore lifeboat, the Joan Woodland, the crew respond to, on average, 80 to 90 shouts a year, covering an area from Brighton Marina to Worthing Pier. The station is run by around 100 volunteers who include a lifeboat operations manager, launch authorities, boat and shore crew, an administrative officer, press officers, fundraisers, shop staff, a visits team, and water safety advisers.
