Llandudno RNLI launch to investigate object reported in the water
On Monday 16 March, Llandudno RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was launched following a report of a dark object drifting in the water near the Rhosneigr buoy, off Rhos-on-Sea.
The lifeboat launched with a crew of four shortly after the call was received. With a strong westerly wind behind them, the crew made good time reaching the reported position.
Llandudno Coastguard officers had met with the member of the public who raised the alarm and were able to assist by directing the lifeboat towards the object.
On arrival, the crew discovered the object to be a fishing pot buoy. As a precaution, the lifeboat conducted a sweep of the surrounding area in case the buoy had drifted away from the original sighting. Two additional pot buoys were located nearby.
With nothing further of concern found, the lifeboat was stood down and returned to station, this time heading back into the strong westerly wind.
Launch Authority David Roberts said: ‘Although this incident turned out to be a false alarm with good intent, we would always encourage people to report anything unusual they see in the water. It is far better for us to check something that turns out to be nothing than for a genuine emergency to go unreported.’
