While the Nation watched England, Bridlington RNLI answered the call
Just as the second half of England’s match kicked off, the volunteer crew from Bridlington RNLI were tasked into service in relation to a possible missing person.
At 11.04pm, the crew were requested to launch by HM Coastguard following reports of a missing person who may have entered the water on a beach south of Bridlington.
With a crew of three onboard, Bridlington RNLI’s inshore lifeboat Ernie Wellings launched at 11.17pm and began conducting a shoreline search towards Barmston.
Shortly before midnight, both Bridlington RNLI and Hornsea Rescue, who had also been tasked by HM Coastguard received an update that the individual had been located safe and well inland. The search was subsequently stood down. The Bridlington RNLI volunteers returned to station, with the lifeboat recovered, refuelled, washed down, and ready again for service by 00.16am.
Bridlington RNLI volunteer Helm, Ash Traves, said, ‘While many people were watching the football, our volunteer crew were ready to respond at a moment’s notice. Thankfully, this incident had a positive outcome, but it highlights how quickly situations can escalate along the coast, particularly late in the evening. We would always urge anyone heading to the coast to be mindful of the conditions and to let someone know your plans. If you see anyone in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.’
