Baltimore RNLI tasked with a medevac call 80 miles south-east of Baltimore
Baltimore RNLI were called out this afternoon (Thursday 25 June) to a medevac call on a fishing trawler, which was 80 miles offshore.
The volunteer lifeboat crew launched their all-weather lifeboat at 12.26pm, following a request from the Irish Coast Guard to provide a medical evacuation for a crewman aboard a fishing trawler, which at the initial time of the call was 80 miles south-east of Baltimore.
As the Baltimore all-weather lifeboat crew made their way offshore, the fishing trawler began to steam towards them. The lifeboat arrived at the trawler at 3.00pm, approximately 55 miles south-east of Baltimore. The casualty was quickly transferred on to the lifeboat, which then proceeded to return to the station in Baltimore, arriving at 5.50pm. The casualty was then handed over to the care of HSE Ambulance crew who were waiting at the station.
There were five volunteer crew onboard the lifeboat, Coxswain Aidan Bushe, mechanic Micheal Cottrell and crew members Ollie O’Mahony, Maria Coleman and Eoin Ryan. Conditions at sea were breezy with an easterly force 5 wind, 1.5m sea swell and moderate visibility.
Speaking following the call out, Kate Callanan, Baltimore RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer said: ‘This was the first shout for Baltimore RNLI’s newest crew member Ollie O’Mahony. Ollie is currently training to be Baltimore’s Senior Station Technician/Mechanic, taking over the role from Cathal Cottrell who recently retired from that position. On behalf of everyone here at Baltimore RNLI we would like to welcome Ollie and wish him all the best in his new role. Please remember, should you get into difficulty or have a medical emergency at sea, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.’
