Angle RNLI receive awards for triple shouts during Storm Betty
Last week during a visit from RNLI Trustees and Management undertaking a coast review, members of the crew were presented with awards for their actions in three back to back shouts during Storm Betty, on the evening of the 18 August 2023 with Force 10 winds gusting 56 knots and 6m sea
The Y boat was deployed with Lewis at the helm and Robert as crew and the casualty was plucked from his vessel moments before it succumbed to the conditions.
Shortly after rescuing the casualty, the lifeboat was diverted to assist a second yacht in difficulty after fouling his propeller and being blown ashore off Dale Beach. The second yacht was taken under tow to safety at Hazelbeach.
For both of these shouts, one life was saved and a second person assisted.
Whilst concluding the second tasking, the lifeboat was diverted alongside Coastguard Rescue Helicopter R924 and Appledore All-weather Lifeboat to the aid of a yacht with two persons onboard who had declared mayday 30 miles south-west of St Ann’s Head, after severe weather conditions tore their main sail and fouled their propeller.
After a two hour passage in horrendous conditions the lifeboat arrived on scene and established a tow. The crew then undertook a 6 hour tow back to Milford Haven. The unfavourable conditions resulted in the tow having to be reset three times in the chaotic seas.
As a result of this tasking, two persons were rescued.
