Paul has qualified as an Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) Navigator, while Simon has qualified as an All Weather Lifeboat (ALB) Navigator. Both assessments were conducted by Coastal Lifeboat Trainer Simon Bunting.

The role of an RNLI Navigator is to support the coxswain or helm by providing accurate navigational information, maintaining situational awareness, identifying hazards, planning safe routes, and assisting with the effective coordination of search and rescue operations.

As part of their pass-out, Paul and Simon completed comprehensive assessments of both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This included navigation policy and procedures, collision regulations, local knowledge, route planning, search and rescue navigation, electronic navigation systems, search planning, and casualty location techniques. Throughout the assessment, they were required to demonstrate sound decision-making, interpret tidal and environmental conditions, safely plan and execute routes, and confidently support the lifeboat commanders in a range of realistic operational scenarios.

The navigator is a key operational role within the RNLI, helping to ensure lifeboat crews can operate safely and effectively in all conditions while responding to those in need at sea.
