Pwllheli RNLI Launches to Assist Yacht in Difficulty Near Harbour Entrance
On Friday 3 June, Pwllheli RNLI’s D-class inshore lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard to assist a yacht experiencing difficulty near the entrance to Pwllheli harbour.
The 10-metre sailing vessel, with one person on board, had suffered a mechanical failure which prevented it from making safe progress into the harbour.
Pwllheli RNLI’s volunteer crew responded swiftly, launching the D-class inshore lifeboat and arriving on scene at 4.00pm shortly after being tasked. Following an assessment of the situation, the crew determined that the safest course of action was to establish a tow and escort the yacht to a place of safety.
A tow was successfully established and the yacht was brought safely into Pwllheli Marina. The sole occupant was unharmed, and no further assistance was required once the vessel had been securely moored.
Launch Authority, Trevor Jones said:
‘Mechanical failures can occur unexpectedly, even on well-maintained vessels. On this occasion, the sailor did the right thing by seeking assistance when they were unable to make safe progress into the harbour. We would encourage all mariners to carry reliable means of communication, such as a VHF radio, and to ensure someone ashore is aware of their plans. If you find yourself in difficulty on the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
The RNLI volunteer crews remain on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ready to respond to those in need at sea.
