Redcar RNLI Flag Day brings in the crowds

There were lots of activities for families to see and join in with. Highlights such as Marske Fisherman’s choir singing in the Boathouse proved to be very popular with the crowds. Another favourite on the day was the RNLI ‘Dress up Challenge’ where Mams, Dads and their kids competed to see how quickly they could get dressed if they had to go to sea for a shout. There were prizes for the fastest adult and the fastest kid.

The day had great support from other emergency services like North Eastern Ambulance Service, the Coastguard and Blood Bikes along side the British Divers Marine Life Rescue team, who had a real live incident during the afternoon and rescued a distressed seal from the lifeboat slipway. A team from Everyone Active also attended as well as Redcar’s own RNLI Water Safety team who were busy all day giving people great advice on how to stay safe along our coast.

The fundraising was supported by Redcar’s Ladies Guild who once again did fantastic work and could be seen collecting, running tombola stalls and selling books all around the town.

The day was topped off with a display of lifeboat rescue and handling skills which thrilled the crowd and brought up a huge cheer each time the volunteer crew retrieved the rescue dummy ‘Dead Fred’ from the sea.

Dave Cocks, Chairman of Redcar RNLI said: ‘Every year the people of Redcar and its surrounding area turn out in great numbers to support our Flag Day. The money raised helps to equip and train our volunteers to the highest of standards so that they can continue to keep on saving lives at sea.’
