Shoreham RNLI crew share essential water safety advice as school holidays begin

The recent warm weather has seen a significant increase in taskings for the volunteer crew at Shoreham RNLI, with its lifeboats being called to a range of incidents along the coast over the past few weeks - from kayakers to snorkelers to paddleboarders.

To help people stay safe when visiting the beach during the school holidays, two Shoreham RNLI volunteer crew, Zoe List and Kicki Smith, have made a video highlighting some key RNLI water safety advice, and they are asking for people to share this video to help everyone stay safe in the water this summer.

Zoe List, volunteer boat crew, said: "We made this video because we know that a fun day out on the water can easily turn dangerous, and we want to make sure that everyone knows what to do so they can stay safe when visiting the beach. As volunteer crew for Shoreham RNLI, we are always ready to help those who need us, and part of that is helping to make sure that people understand what to do to keep themselves safe."

Key RNLI water safety advice for when visiting the beach:
  • Visit a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags
  • Don’t take inflatables into the sea
  • If paddleboarding, wear a properly fitted life jacket and take a phone in a waterproof pouch
  • If you get into difficulty, remember Float to Live
  • If you see anyone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the coastguard
