Wicklow RNLI assist four sailors after their yacht developed mechanical problems
The all-weather lifeboat RNLB Bridie O’Shea slipped its moorings at 1.25pm on Saturday afternoon (18 July) to reports of a yacht with four people onboard which had developed mechanical issues near Greystones.
The lifeboat under the command of Coxswain Tommy McAuley was alongside the casualty vessel thirty minutes after launching. Weather conditions on scene were moderate sea, with wind northeasterly in direction force 4.
Following an assessment of the situation carried out by Coxswain McAuley, it was decided that the best course of action was to escort the yacht back to Wicklow and bring it into the harbour under tow.
When the yacht arrived off Wicklow harbour, the volunteer lifeboat crew set up a tow line. The boat was taken under tow and secured alongside the south quay at 4.30pm.
With the four sailors safely ashore the lifeboat crew returned to station.
Speaking after the callout Launch Authority Adrian O’Connor said ‘This was another quick response by our volunteer crew with their training and equipment providing a successful outcome today. I’d like to remind anyone going on the water in this good weather to have a suitable means of calling for assistance. If you see anyone in trouble on the water, please call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.’
