Torbay RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews launch 13 times in nine days
The past nine days saw Torbay RNLI crews tasked to 13 incidents across Tor Bay at all hours of the day and night. Shouts included the rescue of a swimmer in serious difficulty close to Goodrington Beach, Paignton by the Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) and her three crew.
Other taskings have seen search-and-rescue operations in the waters and along the shorelines in-and-around Tor Bay, as well as assistance given by the All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) to stricken vessels in busy waters in the area. For the month so far, volunteer crews have come to the aid of 13 people with the crews averaging one ‘shout’ a day since the beginning of July.
Across the taskings, the volunteer crews have worked closely with teams from all of the emergency services. Alongside the teams from Torquay and Brixham Coastguard Rescue, South Western Ambulance Service, and Devon and Cornwall Police, one shout also saw the ALB and ILB and ten volunteer crew assist Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service in bringing firefighters and their equipment to fight a wildfire at an otherwise inaccessible location near Hopes Nose, Torquay.
Richard Fowler, Coxswain at Torbay RNLI commented, ‘It’s turning out to be a busy 160th anniversary year for us. My thanks go to our volunteer crews who continue to show exceptional commitment during a very busy few weeks of shouts. The pace of training hasn’t let-up either, with eight exercises over that time, too. And we’re all also preparing for a full month of events in August – hoping the fine weather continues.’
