New Press Officer volunteers appointed at Portsmouth RNLI

Lifeboats News Release

Portsmouth RNLI is pleased to announce the appointment of a new press team, with long-standing volunteer Alex Lochrane taking on the role of Press Officer, supported by Deputy Press Officer Abi Hinton.

Alex brings with him a wealth of experience both within the RNLI and beyond. He has volunteered as a Launch Authority at Portsmouth RNLI for the past five years, playing a key role in authorising lifeboat launches and supporting operational decision-making. Now retired, Alex previously worked as a charity director for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, giving him extensive experience in communications, public engagement and working with the media.

Speaking about his new role, Alex said: ‘I took on the Press Officer role because I want to help shine a light on the dedication of our volunteers and the vital lifesaving work carried out at Portsmouth RNLI.

It’s important that our community understands what goes on behind the scenes and how they can stay safe around the water.’

Joining him as Deputy Press Officer is Abi Hinton, who has been an RNLI volunteer for five years. Abi began her RNLI journey at Aberdovey RNLI, where she spent two years as boat crew before moving to Portsmouth three years ago. Since relocating, she has continued volunteering as boat crew while studying at university to become a paramedic. Abi brings strong operational knowledge, frontline emergency service experience and a calm, professional approach to communications, helping ensure the station’s lifesaving work is accurately and effectively shared.

Together, Alex and Abi will be responsible for promoting the lifesaving work of Portsmouth RNLI, supporting operational volunteers, and engaging with the local media community to highlight the importance of water safety within the charity.
