Two Wicklow RNLI Crewmembers pass assessments in a busy start to the year.
Volunteers Adelaide Kane and Kelly Byrne have begun 2026 on a positive note by passing Tier 2 and Tier 1 assessments respectively.
As part of the training programme for new crew the RNLI introduced a tiered system to bring new volunteers from trainees to full crewmembers.
Yesterday evening (14 January) Adelaide passed her Tier 2 assessment which now means that she is a fully qualified member of our Shannon Class lifeboat, while Kelly passed her Tier 1 assessments and will now move onto preparing for her Tier 2 pass out.
The evening began with a theory test for both volunteers in the boat house. This was followed by the practical elements where they were put through their paces in the dark, in very wet and windy conditions, which added an extra layer of complexity to their tasks. They both performed incredibly well with the numerous tasks required of them. Some of the areas assessed included anchoring, towing, radar and Man Overboard scenarios.
Speaking after the assessments, Wicklow RNLI Coxswain Ciaran Doyle said ‘Adelaide and Kelly performed very well in difficult conditions during their assessment. Their dedication, time and commitment were rewarded with two successful outcomes. Adelaide now becomes a full member of our Shannon crew, and I have no doubt Kelly won’t be too far behind.’
