The Whitstable ‘B’ Class lifeboat, Lewisco launched at 11.58 and the crew located the casualties around 200-300 metres west of the causeway at Harty Ferry having made their way to a higher part of the shoreline.

The three, all male and their two dogs were able to walk to the lifeboat through the shallow water and were subsequently landed ashore into the care of the Sheppey coastguard rescue team at Harty.

Lifeboat helm Sam Turner said “The three had been walking through the marsh and had checked the tide tables for the area but unfortunately a surge in the tide caught them out and cut off their route”.

“Fortunately they made their way to some higher land and again did the right thing by calling for assistance”.

There were no injuries to any of the three casualties or their dogs. Weather conditions in the area at the time of the call were north westerly force 4 winds, drizzle but good visibility. This was the first call of the year for the volunteers at Whitstable RNLI.

  • The station is equipped with an Atlantic 85 lifeboat named Lewisco, purchased through a bequest of a Miss Lewis of London who passed away in 2006.

  • She is what is known as a rigid inflatable inshore lifeboat, the boat’s rigid hull being topped by an inflatable sponson. She carries a crew of four people.
