At 11.05am on Sunday 2 of November, Trearddur Bay relief Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Julie Poolie was on exercise off Trearddur Bay, when they were contacted by HM Coastguard requesting they proceed to Rhosneigr to assist a person struggling in rough sea. The conditions were fresh with a south-westerly breeze creating a choppy sea state.

The casualty could be seen some 100m from the shoreline struggling close to rocks. Realising that it would be too dangerous to go straight to the casualty, Helm Griffiths brought the lifeboat back out to sea and headed down the coast a short distance prior to turning back towards the casualty. Running beam to sea, he brought the lifeboat back safely into the bay and with precision timing, placed the lifeboat’s port side alongside the casualty - whereupon Crew Members Tomm Moffett and Hayden Bowers, quickly recovered the casualty into the lifeboat. The casualty was observed to be motionless and in very poor condition.

After a while and with initial casualty care from the crew, the casualty began to recover. They were placed in a survivor life jacket, survival bag and a balaclava was donned – all prepared by Matt McNaught. Realising the urgency for medical attention, Helm Griffiths asked for helicopter assistance to evacuate the casualty, as a beach landing was impossible and transit back to the lifeboat station would take time.

Regional Operations Lead Ryan Jennings wrote in the letter:

‘The response to this incident was a great demonstration of professionalism and teamwork onboard the lifeboat. The situation of the casualty was a serious one, yet the timely response, precision boat handling, and quick and informed actions taken by the helm and the crew underpinned by their training and experience, led to the timely recovery of the casualty and exemplary casualty care being given which ultimately saved their life.’

Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, Paul Moffett, said:

‘It is always nice to receive a letter like this noting the good work the crew do. This is a true testament to the dedication the volunteers have, which in this case has led to a life being saved. The whole station is very proud of them.’
