RNLI Tighnabruaich welcomes new volunteer on board
The station’s latest volunteer recently travelled to the specialist facility RNLI College in Poole, Dorset to complete emergency procedures training for new boat crew. Trainees practise in the training pool there to prepare for real life rescue service.
Having watched some episodes of Saving Lives at Sea, Timothy knew the RNLI operate to save lives, but wasn’t sure what to expect from training. In one exercise, trainees work together to right a capsized vessel in difficult conditions. Timothy explained “when you’re in the training pool with the waves splashing your face, feeling around under a boat in the dark, I realised how important it is that there are people who know what to do and how to help someone in trouble”.
With some leisure sailing experience having grown up locally, volunteering for the RNLI has been “an experience that has made really think about why I’m doing it and has challenged me in a good way”.
Timothy’s next challenge will take him to Edinburgh Napier University to study a Degree in Engineering with the potential for a working life at sea. Meantime, he is important volunteer crew with the charity that saves lives at sea.
