Three shouts in a day for Whitby RNLI and first few new crew member.

The pager sounded three times yesterday (Saturday 1 August) for volunteers at Whitby Lifeboat station.

The first call came in at 8.30am to a 19 foot vessel in trouble off Runswick Bay.

The Shannon Class all weather lifeboat was launched and joined Runswick Bay Rescue Boat who were already on the scene.

Due to the size of the vessel it was decided that Lois Ivan would take over the tow.
The service call was the first for Jamie Wassal, one of Whitby RNLIs newest volunteers.

Coxswain on the rescue, Jonathan Marr said: 'safe towing procedures are part of our regular training exercises and it was a great opportunity for new crew member Jamie to see this skills put into practice.'

The second call came in the afternoon to a person in distress in the harbour, however the Coastguard were already on the scene and providing care to the casualty so the crew were stood down.

The final call of the day came in at 3.30pm to reports of a family cut off by the tide to the east of Whitby, below the abbey.

The inshore lifeboat was launched and a thorough search was conducted but no one matching the description was found to the crew were stood down.

The inshore lifeboat was returned to station and made ready for service.
