Wooden sailing vessel requires Bridlington RNLI assistance
RNLI Bridlington’s all weather lifeboat Antony Patrick Jones was launched shortly after midnight on Thursday 30 April, to assist a sailing vessel off the East Yorkshire coast.
The crew of the casualty vessel had raised concerns as they were unsure of their exact position and were struggling to remain underway. At 11.17pm, RNLI Bridlington’s all‑weather lifeboat Antony Patrick Jones was tasked, launching from the beach in Bridlington at 12.01am.
The lifeboat located and established contact with the vessel at 12.45am. After discussions between the yacht’s crew, HM Coastguard and the lifeboat crew, it was agreed that the safest course of action would be for the sailing vessel to make its way to Bridlington Harbour under escort. The conditions at the time were an strong easterly wind in moderate to choppy sea conditions.
The sailing vessel and RNLI Lifeboat both arrived safely in Bridlington Harbour at around 2.15am. The volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew ensured the yacht was secure before departing the harbour at 2.40am. The RNLI lifeboat was back on the beach at 2.46am and returned to service at 4.15am.
The tasking also marked the first for RNLI volunteer Alex Rollin, who stated ‘It was exciting to finally put all my training into action during a live incident. I was relieved to see just how well that training prepared me for the situation, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be in a position where I can help people when they need us most.’
