The yacht had broken down and was unable to rig sails in 25-knot northerly winds, leaving it at anchor and increasingly affected by the conditions.

On arrival, a member of the volunteer crew was transferred on board to assess the situation and assist with preparing the vessel. The casualty’s health and welfare were checked and found to be well.

With the wind continuing to increase and conditions becoming more challenging due to wind against tide, the swell was building, causing the yacht to roll heavily at anchor, the casualty had limited experience and was unable to safely manage the vessel in the conditions.

Walmer RNLI helm assessed the situation against RNLI towing procedures and determined that the criteria for a tow had been met. The vessel was at risk due to the deteriorating conditions and also posed a potential risk to other vessels in the area, making it unsafe to leave at anchor.

The yacht was taken under tow to Ramsgate Harbour. Once inside the harbour’s turning circle, the tow was shortened and reconfigured into an alongside tow to enable a safe and controlled berthing.

Coastguard Rescue Team was in attendance to meet the casualty on arrival.

Denis Brophy, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Walmer RNLI, said: ‘This was a good example of effective teamwork by our volunteer crew to assist a lone sailor in challenging conditions. With the wind increasing and the effects of wind against tide, the sea state can quickly become more hazardous, particularly for smaller vessels.

‘We would always advise anyone going to sea to ensure their vessel is well prepared, check the weather forecast, and carry a means of calling for help. If you find yourself in difficulty, call for assistance early.’

The lifeboat was recovered following a successful return to station. The Lifeboat Operations Manager praised the excellent teamwork between crew and shore crew during the service, particularly in challenging recovery conditions.
