Port Talbot RNLI launch over the weekend
Port Talbot RNLI lifeboat was called to reports of a possible person in water off Aberavon beach.
Port Talbot RNLI lifeboat Craig Morris was launched at 7.13pm on Saturday 25 April at the request of Milford Haven Coastguard, following reports of an object, possibly a person, in the water approximately 300 metres off Aberavon Beach.
The volunteer crew assembled quickly and began a search of the reported location alongside Port Talbot Coastguard. On arrival, a fishing pot was located, and nobody was found to be in immediate danger.
Shortly afterwards, the lifeboat was re-tasked by the Coastguard to the River Neath area following a further report of a small craft with people onboard. Making best speed to the scene, the crew located an eight foot inflatable kayak carrying three adult males.
With a strong ebbing tide creating challenging conditions, the lifeboat helm advised the group to return to land.
The advice was accepted, and the lifeboat crew provided an escort, offering shelter from the turbulent water as the kayak made its way safely to Crymlyn Burrows. Once ashore, the crew assisted in recovering the kayak up the beach. Following the incident, the lifeboat was returned to the station, refuelled, and made ready for service.
Port Talbot RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Clive Morris said:
‘We want people to enjoy themselves when visiting the coast but advise that anyone taking part in any activity carries the correct safety equipment and has a means of calling for help but going afloat without the proper safety equipment or a means of communication puts lives at risk.
‘This incident had a safe outcome, but it could easily have been very different. We urge anyone heading out on the water to wear a lifejacket, and always consider the conditions.’
He added:
‘This was a great example of effective teamwork between the lifeboat crew and Coastguard teams. The member of the public who raised the initial concern did exactly the right thing. If you ever see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
