Jim Candy appointed Lifeboat Operations Manager at Montrose RNLI

Lifeboats News Release

Montrose RNLI is pleased to announce the appointment of Jim Candy as the station’s new Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM), a key leadership role responsible for the day-to-day management and operational readiness of the lifeboat station.

As Lifeboat Operations Manager, Jim will oversee all operational activities, ensuring the station and its equipment are maintained in a constant state of readiness for service. The role includes authorising lifeboat launches, supporting and leading station volunteers, and working closely with emergency services and the wider RNLI to help deliver its lifesaving mission.

Jim takes over the role from Derek Smart, who is nearing his retirement from the RNLI after many years of dedicated service. His contribution will be recognised in an upcoming press release.

Jim brings a wealth of experience to the position, having first joined the Montrose lifeboat crew in 1991. Over more than two decades on the crew, he served as boat crew and 3rd Mechanic on the All-Weather Lifeboat, and as Helmsman on the Inshore Lifeboat, attending numerous call-outs in challenging North Sea conditions.

One of his most memorable rescues came in 1993, when the Montrose lifeboat launched to assist a pilot boat that had suffered engine failure in storm-force weather. The demanding operation, carried out aboard the Tyne-class RNLB Moonbeam, tested the skill and endurance of all involved and remains a standout moment in Jim’s service.

After stepping away from lifeboat crew duties in 2014, Jim returned to the station in 2021 as a Launch Authority, transitioning to a shoreside role where he has continued to support safe and effective operations. His appointment as Lifeboat Operations Manager is a natural progression, building on decades of experience both at sea and ashore.

Reflecting on his long-standing involvement, Jim said:
“After volunteering for so long, the RNLI has just become a part of life. It’s something I’m still incredibly passionate about after all this time. The people, the camaraderie, and the sense of purpose you get from being part of the crew is something that stays with you. It’s an honour to take on this role and support the crew, making sure we’re always ready to launch when we are needed.”

Area Operations Manager Henry Weaver said:
“Jim’s appointment as Lifeboat Operations Manager is extremely well deserved. His depth of experience, commitment to the RNLI, and understanding of the station make him ideally suited to the role. We’re delighted to see him take on this position and continue supporting the crew and wider team in Montrose.”

The RNLI has also been a significant part of Jim’s family life. His late mum, Megan, was a member of the Ladies Guild for 30 years, and his late brother Tommy also served on the lifeboat crew. Growing up, the RNLI was ever-present, making his continued commitment to the organisation especially meaningful.

Everyone at Montrose RNLI wishes Jim every success in his new role and thanks him for his ongoing dedication to saving lives at sea.
