Earlier this year Chiswick crew hosted a visit from Rick Ives, coxswain at Southport Flotilla of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, south of Brisbane. They have similar activities to the RNLI, mainly vessel assistance and Search & Rescue covering both inland waters and offshore. Although the sub tropical setting is very different from the murky Thames, crews face similar challenges.

In September Cedric Trooskens, Sergeant with Brandweer Zone Antwerpen Water Rescue Team came to Chiswick Lifeboat Station. His main interest was in the E-class lifeboat, as they are currently building a new rescue boat for the River Scheldt.

Cedric commented ‘Your clear overview of the boat’s systems and your experience operating a permanently afloat unit in strong current and wash were particularly valuable for us in Antwerp, as we will soon begin similar operations on the River Scheldt. Please also extend my thanks to the whole crew on duty for their hospitality and professionalism. It was a real pleasure to meet such a skilled and dedicated team.’

Chiswick RNLI lifeboat station is the second busiest in the UK and Ireland. Since The RNLI search and rescue service on the Thames started in 2002, Chiswick Lifeboat has attended over 5,000 incidents and saved over 200 lives. The RNLI is entirely funded by public donations.
