Peter Kerr has been a crew member for 11 years and is a qualified lifeboat navigator, assisting the coxswain with plotting courses and search patterns, in all weather conditions, in daylight and in darkness. Peter also supports other crew to improve their search and rescue navigation skills.

As well as his role as a crew member, Peter regularly assists with visits to Lerwick Lifeboat station by individuals and school groups to learn more about the work of the RNLI. Peter also often helps with events to raise funds for the RNLI, helping the charity meet the costs of training and equipping the lifeboat crew.

Volunteer John Angus has also been recognised for his contribution to RNLI as one of the station's Launch Authorities - a vital role to approve the launch of the lifeboat when requested by HM Coastguard, liaising with the coxswain and paging the lifeboat crew.

John assists with lifeboat launches, whether for training or incidents, and often also attends when the lifeboat returns to help with berthing and refuelling. He too helps with the organisation of fundraising events and helps to spread the charity's key messages.

Peter and John – both unaware they were to be the focus of the evening – received their certificates from Jill Hepburn, RNLI Head of Region for Scotland at Lerwick Lifeboat Station yesterday evening, in the company of most of the lifeboat crew.

John Webster, RNLI Lerwick Branch Chairman said: "The RNLI depends on volunteers and we're grateful to Peter and John for all that they have done and continue to do for RNLI Lerwick. Their dedicated work as volunteers really helps with the operation of the station and contributes to our vital fundraising to help us save lives at sea.”
