Burnham-on-Sea RNLI volunteers tasked to two incidents.

Lifeboats News Release

Burnham volunteer lifeboat crews were paged by Milford Haven Coastguard control at 2.15pm yesterday, 7th October. The task was to assist a search of the Bristol Channel, following activation of an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), apparently in the vicinity of Cardiff.

Burnham’s Atlantic 85 Doris Day and Brian was taken to the beach. As the tide was at one of its lowest points of the year, the launch proved to be challenging and, with the boat ready on the beach and crew assessing launch options, the Atlantic was stood down from the search, to await further information.

Whilst waiting for an update, a second tasking came in from the Milford Coastguard control following reports of a person requiring assistance at Brean. Given the potential requirement to operate close to the beach, and in shallower water, the smaller D Class lifeboat Burnham Reach was despatched. On arrival, at the casualty area, the incident had concluded, so the volunteers were stood down and therefore returned to Burnham-on-Sea. The Atlantic 85 was also stood down, and both boats recovered to the lifeboat station for very muddy wash-downs, refuelling and being made ready for the next incident.

Duty Launch Authority, Nigel Morton said; ‘It was a busy afternoon for us, with taskings both in deeper, more open water, and closer to the shore in shallower water. Our two boats offer capabilities in both environments, and yesterday demonstrated the differing taskings that we need to be able to respond to.’
